Shutting Down
Thanks for your support, if you have bookmarked, linked to, or referred me in any way, I ask you to please update and I hope you choose to continue following me, as 2007 is already shaping up to be my most amazing year yet.
It almost seems wrong to slot these words next to each other, but the reality is that we now live in an age where devices such as laptops, iPods, PDA's and headphones can be charged wirelessly (and thoughtlessly). Wildcharge (Est. 2005), right out of the gate suggests losing cumbersome adapters completely in favor of a single pad; when devices are lain flat, in full contact with the surface, they are charged. The catch however, is the need to update each device with a special module that helps receive the charge... small price to pay. I have skepticism to whether this will be our ultimate lesson in sterility, but also acknowledge an obvious future; I believe the day will come where this technology loses it mouse pad-like appearance and finds itself fused under the surface of everyday desks (home, office, classroom), counter tops, and tables. As right now my battery runs low, sitting at Starbucks, I see endless possibilities: coffee shops, boardroom tables, airline fold-downs, podiums...
It's been a very long time since I've blogged anything and for that I apologize, but coincidentally... life happened. So to answer the million dollar question (I humor myself that it is actually that), what has Todd Smith been up to lately? Long story short, the last three weeks have been a blur of red and white, as I've knelt down and done my civic duty, creating a video segment for Bob Rae and this past week's Liberal Leadership Convention. In total I worked about eight all-nighters, but seeing the smiling faces of everyone involved made it all worth it. LINK.
And he called VFS out. Let me start by saying that the youtube generation is for the most part lazy and uneducated, but here comes a young man with a little more thought than the average internet troll. Charlie Winter, when finding a VFS final project by Ori Ben-Shabat, deemed it neccesary to formulate a response in almost Zoolanderish CG form. So instead of going total crap as most notions do, Charlie pulled out his demo reel and served up a plate of style. This is what the youtube experience should be about.
I'm in love. Not with anyone, but rather, a website. So as geek jokes ensue, let me further this by saying that five lines of javascript have made my life complete. I've been using Google Analytics for a while now and all I can say is, wow, I'm more of a geek than I ever imagined. The good news is, I have tracked hits coming in from all over the world, funneled traffic to my site, and seen intense rundowns of who is using my site, where they're located, and what platform/browser they are using. Did I mention that it's free? Did you know this website has viewers on four continents? I do now... kinda creepy when you think about it, the only Todd Smith a lot of people know is these shameful rants and the work I produce.
Bright and early this morning, I packed up shop and landed on the doorstep of Industrial Brand Creative; luckily, because they have somewhat warm hearts, they let me in out of the rain. But why you ask? In an effort to streamline my work, prevent insanity, and be surrounded by inspiration, I had to separate my home from my office. After a year of freelancing in both a studio and a one bedroom apartment, I've really been thinking hard about setting up a commercial space. This is short term, but it's a great start...
10 months in, life on track, now... Goodbye VFS. If you remember reading the Todd Smith Blog back in September, you may know that I made the transition to a new marketing position. Continuing that tradition of only going up, I've left, signing a huge contract on the way out, and I am now a proud 100% freelance designer. Feels good.
